When Should I Schedule My Maternity Session?

As a maternity photographer with more than 30 years of experience, I have a thing to say about this question which I am asked all the time…

Here is my answer to most mamas, and I hope this helps you.

The timing of a maternity shoot is a personal decision and can depend on several things. These are the main considerations for maternity photography sessions.

How far along is your pregnancy?

I recommend scheduling your maternity photos between the 32nd and 36th week of pregnancy. Your belly will have a lovely beautiful rounded shape, and, hopefully, you will still feel comfortable.

How do you feel?

This is the more subjective question. I ask my moms to consider their energy levels and physical comfort. Pregnancy can be tiring, particularly in the later stages. For some mothers, their pregnancy can be difficult for a number of reasons so this is when I encourage mothers to come in sooner than later.

Let’s talk about the season?

We photograph in a studio which has a consistent temperature. For those clients, thinking about an outdoor photography session, definitely be aware of the seasons and the temperature. You may want to avoid extreme heat, cold, or rainy seasons, depending on your preferences and the location you have in mind.

How far in advance should I schedule my session?

It's advisable to contact my studio for maternity photographs as soon as possible so you can secure a date that works for both of us. My schedule books out about 10 weeks in advance.

Multiple sessions:

If you want to capture different stages of your pregnancy, you can consider scheduling multiple maternity shoots. For example, you could have one each trimester including the fourth trimester after the baby is born.

Remember, these are general guidelines, and ultimately the decision rests with you and your photographer. Discuss your preferences, vision, and any specific concerns with the photographer to determine the best timing for your maternity shoot.
