Three maternity photographers celebrate the beauty of the pregnant form

Many of us grew up always falling short of an impossible ideal of the perfect body. Still others came of age wearing their size 6 jeans like a badge of honor. Issues of self esteem exist at both ends of the spectrum, and somewhere in the middle exists the great equalizer—pregnancy. If we're lucky, starting with the first visible sign of new-baby bump and lasting until our final days on earth, we wil all come to experience joy, love, and respect for the live-giving vessel that we are privileged to call our own.

Pregnant women are vulnerable, but also they are strong and powerful, as their bodies are preparing to give birth.

Award-winning fine-art photographer Jennifer Loomis is changing the way pregnant women see their bodies, as well as the way society sees pregnant women. Her first referral came from Annie Leibovitz's studio after Demi Moore was photographed pregnant for Vanity Fair.

More than 1,500 maternity portraits later, Loomis's personal demeanor and passionate mission bring out the true beauty of her subjects. Because she takes the time to get to know women she photographs, her pictures take on a depth that goes far beyond the printed page.
