Article in Northwest Baby and Childby Dawn Dailidenas Capturing the beauty and elegance of the pregnant body is what Jennifer Loomis loves to do. With over ten years experience and a masters in photojournalism, Jennifer and her pregnancy work has been influenced by many photographers including Ruth Bernhard, Annie Liebowitz and Joyce Tenneyson. Jennifer has traveled to and lived in many different countries and has come to realize that in other parts of the world the pregnant women is treated far differently than here in the United States. While some women are anxious "to get it over with", Jennifer finds that many bask in the beauty of pregnancy, and it is this beauty that she captures in her one- to four-hour shoots. Jennifer invites you into her studio in central Seattle or she will travel to your home, asking you to pick a beautiful room with lots of natural light. She come equipped to make this room into her studio, complete with a translucent sheet as a backdrop over the window. While some of her clients prefer the special color film she offers, most prefer black and white. Jennifer talks with her clients before starting the shoot to find out what they like and don't like, and what they are comfortable with. Many of her clients choose to be photographed nude while other prefer to wear something. Jennifer listens to her clients and works to reflect what the mother would like. The finished product is not "just a photograph" but a work of art. Her sessions are a collaborative process with a brief yoga pose to think about posture at the beginning. Then she watches while the mother falls into a comfortable position. Later when her partner or other children are invited into the picture they will naturally fall into a comfortable position together as well. It is these "real" moments that Jennifer waits for. After the baby is born, she offers a discount to do a second sitting to incorporate the entire family. Jennifer does everything, including framing of your portraits, and is happy to sign the matting as each portrait is a unique piece of art. Jennifer Loomis considers herself lucky to work with such wonderful, healthy couples. She is continually inspired by the amazing birth stories she hears. Currently she is working on a book with portraits she has taken. For more information, visit her website at jenniferloomis.com or call 206.329.4772. by Dawn Dailidenas, Northwest Baby and Child |
