More information on the Sacred Mother:
When I became a mother at 46, I had been photographing pregnant women and their children for almost 20 years. I knew a lot about what it was like to be pregnant; I knew a lot about children, but I had no idea how important the role of the mother is to our society and to the planet.
I define mother loosely. Mother can be a woman who was pregnant and had a baby, a woman who adopted a baby or a woman who had no children at all but because a mother in many ways to someone who needed nurturing. For this project, I define mother as the person who is pregnant and about to give birth. This will change no doubt as I move forward and photograph more women and talk about the project.
This project has given me goosebumps from the start and that is a telltale sign to me that I am onto something big.
Please feel free to send me emails and comments. You are helping me create the Sacred Mother Project.
